BUZZFEED. The rising platform that has taken the internet by storm… AND my main source of news, entertainment and life, basically. BuzzFeed is an American internet-based company which produces content over multiple platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Youtube. The media empire focus on tracking viral information and producing humorous content for its avid audience, including the famous twin pregnancy of our Queen.

The “social news and entertainment company” was founded in 2006 by Jonah Peretti and John Johnson. The BuzzFeed site is believed to be one of the fastest growing sites on the internet, with a 2015 revenue of $167 million, and more than 30 million people visiting monthly for trending posts. The company slogan, ‘Media company for the social age’ highlights the changing society to which they are delivering, and allows interaction to the best of its ability, in order to continually engage audiences.

Most millennials have constant interaction with social media through Facebook, Apps, Youtube and Twitter, and BuzzFeed provides a medium for entertainment, as well as high-tech yet modern ways of keeping up to date with news. The various content that the site provides includes trending topics, global news, entertainment, quizzes and videos, all which are often shared to become viral.

WHY BUZZFEED THOUGH?

I can personally and proudly say that I constantly visit Buzzed as my main source of news, entertainment and interaction with society. Prior to really delving into this topic, I read a post on the site entitled,  “27 things everyone who played netball growing up will relate to” and, funnily enough, I did relate to all 27 Points. The company allows audiences to interact without actually interacting, through opinions and thoughts that everyone can relate to on a variety of different interests. BuzzFeed operates out of 18 offices worldwide.

The media source  is not only controlled by the Buzz Community, but those who comment, share or even like anything curated by the company. My favourite thing about BuzzFeed is that it doesn’t target a specific audiences; it spreads over such a wide global network which can take you from news about Trump politics, to quizzes about which fruit you are based on your zodiac sign.

IT’s REAL PEOPLE SHARING OPINIONS, FACTS, CONTENT AND PURE ENTERTAINMENT

  1. I’m guilty of doing every buzz feed quiz possible for as long as I can before I have to stop procrastinating. Your blog is so well set out and easy to navigate, but your content is also entertaining and I learnt so much from this blog post! I had no idea how big the company really is and how many people they actually reach!
I like how you touched on the fact that the articles form discussion through commenting or sharing on social media.
I’d be interested to know if you think there are any negative aspects to using buzz feed as a main source of news feed? I’ve seen a couple articles in which they write on some issues associated with buzzfeed and it might be interesting to see both the positives and the negatives to the news platform.
Here’s a small one that I saw after thinking if there really would be any negatives: http://www.thestranger.com/slog/2017/01/12/24798763/buzzfeed-is-bad-for-journalism

Thanks for writing such an enjoyable post! Your blog is fantastic!

  2. I liked your explanation on how Buzzfeed has emerged as a new media platform and the explanation of how it encompasses a large majority of as well as how the focus of Buzzfeed is on the concept of going ‘viral’. As well as how buzzfeed is a major platform for millennials by encompassing social media platforms (twitter, you tube, etc.) that millennials regularly use. I myself am not a millennial (i’m gen Z), and due to this I find that buzzfeed does not seem to cater towards both sides of the political and ideological spectrum and is heavily biased towards the left-leaning side of things, which can at times be dangerous (SJW’s, Anti-Fa and the Black Bloc). I have also found them to be unreliable in their sources, as shown in the Trump/Russia spying allegations with unsubstantiated claims raising questions in their media and journalistic ethics and standards that was then picked up from other well respected news networks.
